Geostatistical Inversion using StatMod and RockMod

OCTOBER 7-11, 2024
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Learning Objectives:

This course starts with reviewing key concepts in statistics and geostatistics required for a deep understanding of the geostatistical inversion technology, in general and StatMod® and RockMod®, in particular. The principle of Bayesian inference used to combine prior probabilities with beliefs and hypotheses in order to derive posterior probability, will be covered without the need of much mathematics and method of efficient sampling multi-dimensional posterior probability will be discussed. We shall discuss in details the important topics of conditioning of multi-disciplinary data for high-level integration in geostatistical inversion. The discussions will include each topic from different stages of the geostatistical inversion workflow, viz. geostatistical modeling, simulation, unconstrained and constrained inversion, uncertainty analysis and co-simulation.

Participants will learn how to setup and run geostatistical inversions for full stack data using StatMod and multiple partial stack data using RockMod. We shall devote special emphasis on QC, analysis and interpretation of results from geostatistical inversion including ranking of multiple realizations to meet specific objectives in exploration, development and production. The last part of the course will focus on inverting directly for engineering properties using discretized rock physics models as input. Here, our emphasis will be on integrating more geological constraints into reservoir models, particularly including rock physics models to link engineering properties to seismic data.

Benefits:

Upon completion of this course, participants will have good understanding on the complex subject of geostatistical inversion. They will gain technical and software skills to perform geostatistical inversion using StatMod & RockMod modules of JasonWorkbench; QC and analyze the results and also interpret the results with minimal expert supervision. Participants will have a grasp of the key aspects of the workflow required for generating seismically-constrained engineering properties using RockMod. Participants will also be able to use advanced features of the software to integrate key components of geology, geophysics, rock physics and reservoir engineering into reservoir models.
